Its README is frank about how it was made: the TriAevum-specific work is “entirely AI-assisted, under human direction”, on top of mature projects such as Azahar, Ship of Harkinian, libultraship and NVIDIA NRI. The single-screen layout reimplements rlgcarrot’s TopScreen/SingleScreen mod, the HD interface comes from chubbycubby’s OoT3D Vanilla UI/HUD (downloaded by Forge with your consent), and MXAO ambient occlusion comes from Pascal Gilcher’s iMMERSE under a permission granted to this project only.

Take the Windows-x64 ZIP, not GitHub’s “Source code” archive. Because every release is marked pre-release, check the tag shown here rather than GitHub’s “latest” label.

Install on Windows

  1. Extract the ZIP into a writable folder with a short path. Besides README.md and LICENSE, its only file is TriAevumForge.exe.
  2. Run TriAevumForge.exe and select your own decrypted ROM. Leave “Download the HD textures” checked if you want the HD HUD and menus.
  3. When setup finishes, choose Launch game. Afterwards, start TriAevum.exe, which Forge placed beside itself.

Windows still has a 259-character path limit; beta.1.2 keeps its files within it and tells you how many characters to remove if the folder is too deep.

Install on Linux and Steam Deck

  • AppImage: chmod +x TriAevum-*.AppImage, open it and select your ROM in Forge. --forge reopens preparation; --appimage-extract-and-run works without FUSE. Data lives in ~/.local/share/TriAevum.
  • Flatpak: flatpak install --user TriAevum-*-Linux-x86_64.flatpak, then launch it from the applications menu. Data lives in ~/.var/app/io.github.coccofresco.TriAevum/.
  • Steam Deck: prepare in Desktop Mode, then add the AppImage as a non-Steam game and use Steam Input’s Gamepad layout without Proton. Not yet tested on a physical Deck by the developer.

Both Linux packages were qualified on a desktop with an AMD GPU (Mesa RADV); earlier betas were qualified on NVIDIA’s proprietary driver.

Graphics features

  • 60/90 FPS visual interpolation of the original 30 Hz game state. Game logic and speed stay unchanged, and input is sampled late to keep jumps responsive.
  • Real widescreen with 16:9, 21:9 or the original 5:3, and configurable field of view.
  • Ambient occlusion, shadows, water reflections and anti-aliasing, with expensive effects at half resolution so 4K does not need an upscaler.
  • Optional cel/toon shading and outlines; procedural grass within a VRAM budget.
  • Azahar-compatible custom textures and texture dumping; optional Vanilla+ Link remodel downloaded from its author.
  • Free camera and photo mode, named settings profiles, save states.

Press Esc (or R3 on a pad) for the in-game menu, F1 for every setting, and F2 to switch the added effects off and on again. Controller details are on the controller page.

What beta.1.2 fixed

  • The pause map changes floors in dungeons again (#89).
  • Holding A with Roll Dash no longer flickers the lighting (#91, #95, #99).
  • Installs and launches from long folder paths (#92, #103).
  • The end credits no longer crash (#104).
  • Video memory no longer grows until the game crashes; grass stays within a VRAM budget.

Open reports on the issue tracker include a crash in amdvlk64.dll on an RX 6600 while preparing the renderer (#126), WASD controls (#123) and a launcher too large for 1360×768 screens (#111). When reporting, include the version, ROM revision, GPU and driver, and logs/oot3d_native_game.log; never upload ROMs or extracted assets.

TriAevum or the Switch 2 recomps?

If you own the 3DS game, TriAevum is the only one of the three that accepts it, and it needs no compiler. If you own the Switch 2 edition, use Hookshot or Ocarina Recomp. The comparison puts all three side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is TriAevum?

TriAevum (coccofresco/TriAevum), also called Echoes of Time, is an ahead-of-time recompilation of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for PC. It replaces the 3DS rendering with an NRI/Vulkan renderer, puts both 3DS screens onto one, and adds configurable graphics. It started on September 7, 2026.

Is TriAevum the Switch 2 remake?

No. TriAevum works with the Nintendo 3DS game, Ocarina of Time 3D. Ocarina Recomp and Hookshot are the projects for the Switch 2 edition.

Does TriAevum need a compiler?

No. Download the Windows ZIP, AppImage or Flatpak and run Forge (TriAevumForge.exe on Windows). Forge checks your ROM and prepares shaders for your GPU in a few minutes; no compiler or SDK is involved.

Which ROMs does TriAevum accept?

Your own decrypted Ocarina of Time 3D in .3ds or .cci format, EUR or USA region, original or Rev 1. Forge checks the contents, not the filename. Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese releases are not supported yet. This site does not explain how to obtain or decrypt a ROM.

Does TriAevum run on Steam Deck?

The README says to prepare the game in Desktop Mode and add the AppImage as a non-Steam game, using Steam Input’s Gamepad layout without Proton. It also says physical Steam Deck and Gaming Mode testing has not been done yet.

Is TriAevum stable?

It is a beta. Every release is marked pre-release on GitHub, and the developer asks for logs with every report. Reporters have played it through to the end credits; the credits crash was fixed in beta.1.2.
